Sales has negative connotations.
And because of that, many business owners have an aversion to it.
They think, “I don’t do sales. I’m not a salesperson, I’m a technician.“
That’s true.
But if you don’t have a sales team, you ARE the sales team.
Sales Is Not A Dirty Word
I had a client recently who said, “No, we do personal development work. We’re not into sales at all.” when I brought up the topic of sales.
I’m like, “Well how do you make money?” You have to bring people in.”
There were a few big mindset shifts that needed to happen for her to really embrace the fact that sales is not a dirty word.
Here’s one of them.
If you’re doing amazing work and you’re helping people improve their lives, it’s actually a disservice for you to think negatively of sales.
It’s funny. Most people start their business because they really care.
They want to help people improve their lives and be the best version of themselves.
Yet, their fear of looking bad stops them from sharing their message in a bigger way, and doing exactly what they started out to do.
Stop Making It About Yourself
Have a think about this for a second.
Is this true for you?
Are you afraid of looking bad, or possibly embarrassing yourself?
If that’s true, then congratulations on being honest with yourself.
It’s one of those realizations that once you face, will help take your business to the next level…
Stop making it about yourself and start making it about the people you are here to serve.
When you come from a place of, “I’m here to add value“, you make it about your audience, not about how you might look bad.
And once you do, you’ll have more freedom to start sharing your message.
Because the reality is, most people aren’t going to beat you up as much as you’re going to beat yourself up.
They just want to hear the information, say, “Hey, can this help me?,” and move forward.
Your Hesitation To Sell Is Costing Someone Else’s Life
I was at an event once, having just started out doing my stress management training.
As I spoke with a marketer friend of mine, he asks me, “Lucas, why are you not doing online videos? Why are you not doing YouTube? Why are you not sharing your message in a bigger way?“
I started making all these excuses, “Look, man, I’m just starting out. I don’t have a proper studio. I don’t have a setup. I don’t have the right lighting. I have a camera, but I don’t have a microphone.“
He sat me down, and said, “Lucas, you started this business because you wanted to help people that are struggling with anxieties and insecurities and low confidence, right?”
I go, “Yes.“
He proceeds to say, “Just imagine that there’s some 14 year old kid out there somewhere in the world that’s feeling alone, isolated, and helpless. Do you think they care more about the production value of your videos, or they care more about having a message that’s going to help them have some hope to change your life?“
I gotta tell you. This one hit me hard.
Here I was making all these excuses that I wasn’t good enough and I’m wasn’t ready to put myself out there, because I didn’t have the lighting and the background and I didn’t have the studio, and all this other stuff.
But really, at the end of the day it’s all about adding your value.
Some people are going to look at it and go, “Okay, that’s not a good fit“, but others are going to find that hope and inspiration.
And those are the people you want to focus on.
Double Your Impact By Doubling Your Sales
Sales is about putting your message out there.
If you’re not doing that, then you’re doing your audience a disservice.
One of my clients recently had a mindset shift.
The problem was he was involved in his business, but he wasn’t fully committed to the idea of promoting himself.
What changed it all around was one simple question, “What actions are you taking every day that are going to 10X your business?“
And upon contemplation, he noticed he’d been getting caught up in the mechanics of his business.
Every day he was doing the technical work, but realized the only way to truly grow his business was to do exposure-related activities – like public speaking, shooting videos, getting on conferences etc.
That’s what you need to really scale up – not just in terms of sales, but also impact.
Because doing the day-to-day mechanical work is not enough.
It’s going to help service your clients, but in order to exponentially grow your business, you need massive exposure, and public speaking is the #1 way to do it.
You want to do it on video, and on stages.
That’s the real way that you can 10X your business in the next year.
That said, it’s not an easy journey.
There’s going to be a tremendous amount of fears, of insecurities, and obstacles that need to be overcome.
So if you want a mentor in your corner, someone like myself who has been there on that journey, to take you step-by-step on the path to becoming your most confident self, to change people’s lives, to make the money you deserve, then I’d be happy to get in your corner.
