What Most Public Speaking Trainers Won’t Teach You

Do you want it to be more effective when you share a message on stage?

Do you want to connect with your audience better when you’re doing a video?

Do you want to be able to share your message and make a bigger impact in the world?

Well, if you answered yes to any of these questions, I’m going to share with you one secret; one public speaking tip that most public speaking trainers will not share with you.

The Magical Secret Public Speaking Trainers Won’t Tell You

What is this magical secret that’s going to shift it all? It’s very simple.

Intentionality.

Now intentionally is something that’s very important because quite often people swing between two extremes of behavior:

They either take forever to think about something and never take action.

OR

They simply act without thinking.

I’ve seen this happen countless times in the work that I do. For instance, when it comes to the fear of public speaking, my clients usually start at the low end of the spectrum, feeling powerless and unable to act.

At my workshops, they just get started. They get up, get the camera, hit record and just go with it. And while this is beneficial for them to get used to taking action, it’s not the ideal situation.

Why?

Because they’re not taking the time to get clear about what exactly they’re there for.

And by simply making this one shift, especially as they start their journey towards bigger and bigger stages, I’ve seen two things happen with my clients.

  1. They connect better with their audience
  2. They get a lot more ease in their body and more confidence

If that’s what you want, then read on, because I’m about to share with you the steps that are going to help you become more intentional.

How To Become More Intentional

Step #1 – Know Your Audience’s Outcome

Ask yourself:

  • What is the objective that you want your audience to get at the end of it?
  • What do you want them to do, to think, to feel as a result of the talk of the video, of you sharing your message?

When you have that goal clarified, then you can build the content that’s going to support you and your audience in achieving those goals.

It’s very simple. You have to have that clear goal – the action that you want them to take at the end.

It could be:

  • Buying a product
  • Running to the back of the room
  • Booking a call with you one-on-one

Whatever it is, have a very clear intention that you want them to do, to think, to feel.

And oftentimes with a feeling as an outcome, it’s about the hope that they can actually choose the goal that you’re setting up for them.

That’s a big piece because often we are our own number one critic.

And so making that shift is very essential for you to become effective when you share your message. 

Remember, what is it that you want them to do, think, and feel? That’s the first step.

Step #2 – See Yourself As A Vessel

This piece is about seeing yourself as a vessel.

You are a vehicle for your audience to achieve their goals.

One thing that really sabotages speakers’ confidence as they get up there is they think it’s all about them.

You know you’re there. You want to achieve your goals and you want to know what your conversion rate is. But the problem with this is it creates this adversarial approach where it becomes you versus the audience.

It’s not about that. Instead of you versus me, it’s we.

Come from the mindset that “we are here together.

Every time that you get up, and you’re speaking on that stage, look at it from the perspective that they have goals, and you are the vehicle that’s allowing them to achieve those goals.

You are simply a vessel; a vehicle to help them go from where they are to where they want to be; to achieve all the goals that they have.

By changing your perspective, it puts you on the same page as your audience and shows them that you’re on the same path to achieve their goals.

That’s the intentionality about reframing.

Why are you showing up there? Who are you, and how can you help them just as much as they can help you?

It’s a relationship that goes both ways.

Step #3 – Be Present & Be Grateful For The Opportunity

The third piece of intentionality is about the audience and actually being there.

It’s the opportunity. Most people get afraid of public speaking, and they think:

  • I don’t want to be judged
  • I don’t want to be fearful
  • I don’t want to be, you know, people hate me

All these fears come up. But really, this is your opportunity to make a difference.

And public speaking and being on that stage – that’s the platform to truly change someone’s life.

Look at this is an honor. It’s an opportunity.

And when you start changing your thoughts to:

  • Stage time is wealth time.
  • Stage time is transformation time.
  • Stage time is impact time.

… and truly connect with that, that’s when you’ll have intentionality that this whole experience is actually a gift.

Just imagine… we are in such a noisy world where there are people absolutely everywhere.

But people are here paying attention to you. They’re here to listen to you. They’re paying money to listen to what you have to say.

This is such a big shift because it’s an absolute honor.

And when you focus on that, and you have that appreciation for them to be there for you and for them to learn, it changes the way that you show up.

You are going to become more confident, and it all comes from being intentional and appreciative of the opportunity that’s there for you to get up and share your message.

Speak With Intention And You Will Speak With Confidence

So let’s summarize what we’ve learned today.

Intentionality, first of all, is about looking back and going, “What is my intention? Before I speak; before I share this video, what’s the outcome I want for my audience? What do I want them to think, do and feel at the end of my talk or video?

The second piece is seeing yourself as a vessel. Instead of turning it into a psychological battle where you’re trying to prove yourself to your audience, see yourself as someone there to simply help them. Instead of you versus me, it’s we.

And the third is the intention of appreciating the opportunity that’s here, presented right in front of you. That you have a platform to share your message to help them achieve their goals.

These are three pieces of intentionality that are gonna help you achieve a massive shift, in terms of:

  • increasing your effectiveness
  • being more confident
  • and most importantly sharing your message and making the impact that you’re put on this planet to make

So go out there and start cultivating your intention 🙂
